Finding Furaha is the story of Mutu, an extremely unlucky boy whose mother dies giving birth to him. Everything that could possibly go wrong in his life, does. His family nicknames him “Bad Luck” and treats him like an outcast. He lives in a poor farming village that exists at the mercy of their landlord. He befriends and falls in love with the landlord’s daughter, but they are not allowed to marry. Further, he is prohibited from working as a potter after years of apprenticeship. He ends up slaving on a farm, from dusk to dawn, with no hope of change or progress. Life becomes meaningless. The landlord’s daughter tells him of a place called Furaha, where everyone knows the meaning of life. Mutu leaves the village and embarks on a dangerous journey through the wilderness to find Furaha.
This is a simple and enjoyable story about our struggle for meaning and purpose. It identifies and challenges common social beliefs that prevent the individual from living a happy life. Through Mutu, we see how society is structured, in ways that don’t make sense, for the benefit of a few. It points out how most of the things we consider important are actually not important, and are in fact unnecessary barriers to happiness. It is not a typical motivational book. It is simply a revelation of who we are and why we are here. It is one path to happiness.
